Bageshwar Bypoll Result Winner: BJP Retains Uttarakhand Seat As Parwati Dass Defeats Basant Kumar Of Congress

Bageshwar Bypoll Result 2023: BJP had fielded Parwati Dass, wife of Chandan Ram Das, while Congress had given a ticket to Basant Kumar. Giving a ticket to a turncoat proved costly for Congress.

Bageshwar Bypoll Result Winner: In the byelection held for the Bageshwar Assembly seat of Uttarakhand, BJP candidate Parwati Dass defeated Basant Kumar of Congress. Parwati Dass defeated the Congress leader by a margin of 2,321 votes. Byelection for this seat of Kumaon division was held on September 5. BJP has been winning this assembly seat for two decades.

The byelection for this seat was necessitated by the death of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Chandan Ram Das, who was the Transport Minister in the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami Cabinet in April. A total of five candidates were trying their luck in the byelection, but the main contest was between the ruling party BJP and the Opposition Congress.

BJP fielded Parwati Dass, the wife of Chandan Ram Dass, while Congress gave a ticket to Basant Kumar against her. Kumar had contested the last assembly elections in 2022 on an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket, but switched to Congress just before the byelection. Apart from BJP and Congress, Samajwadi Party, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, and Uttarakhand Parivartan Party also fielded their candidates. However, giving ticket to the turncoat proved costly for the Congress.

Counting of votes in Bageshwar byelection started at 8 am. In the first round, Congress candidate Basant Kumar was leading by 754 votes. After which Parvati Devi overtook Basant Kumar in the second round. In the third round, BJP was one vote ahead of the Congress candidate. After this, Parwati Dass did not look back and gradually gained a decisive lead and won the election. This is a big relief for the ruling BJP in the state before the 2024 elections.
