A 28-year-old PhD student allegedly died by suicide over humiliation from a family after her father got money from them with a promise to get them a job. The woman took to the extreme step at her house on December 25. In the case, the police held the deceased's father along with the two members of the family who were allegedly responsible for the humilation.

According to a complaint filed by the victim’s mother at the Nacharam Police Station on December 26, the father had borrowed the amount from a family. He had received the money with the promised to secure a job for one of their members at the research institute. The complainant claimed her daughter was unaware of the transaction, although the accused family maintained that the agreement occurred in her presence.

When the father failed to deliver on the promise, the family allegedly pressured both him and the victim. They also filed a cheating case against them. The complainant stated that the accused demanded Rs 35 lakh to withdraw the case and issued threats that deeply distressed the student.

The police registered a case under charges of abetment to suicide and provisions of the SC/ST Act. “Three individuals have been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway,” a police official said.

In the selfie video recorded before her death and aired by TV channels showed the victim stating that her father did receive the money. However, she was unware of it.

"I was asked to pay the amount, but I don't agree with it. They are responsible for my death and should be punished. A 'fake FIR' was filed against me," she said, as per a report on PTI.
