A notorious history-sheeter named Duraisamy, also known as 'MGR Nagar' Durai, was killed in a police encounter near Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu, on Thursday. The police acted on a tip-off that Durai was hiding in a eucalyptus grove armed with weapons.


A team led by Inspector Muthaiyan arrived at the scene to apprehend Durai. As the police attempted to secure him, Durai reportedly grabbed a knife, stabbed Sub Inspector Mahalingam and tried to escape. Despite firing a warning shot into the air, Durai continued his assault on the police following which the inspector fired two rounds in self-defense.

In the impact, Durai sustained injuries and was rushed to the Pudukottai Government Medical College Hospital but he was declared brought dead. Sub Inspector Mahalingam, who sustained an injury to his right hand, was admitted to the Government Hospital in Alangudi, according to a report on The Hindu.


Pudukottai Superintendent of Police Vandita Pandey visited the encounter site to conduct an inquiry. 


According to the police, Durai, a resident of MGR Nagar in the neighboring Tiruchirapalli district, was classified as an A-plus category rowdy by the organized crime intelligence unit (OCTU). Over the years, he had been involved in 74 crimes, including four murders, attempted murders, extortion, and robberies, across Tiruchirapalli, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, and Ariyalur districts, as reported by UNI.






In November 2023, a 30-year-old man with a criminal record was fatally shot by a special police team in the Sanamangalam forest area within the Siruganur police jurisdiction in Tiruchy. According to the police, the man was shot by the police in self-defense after he reportedly attacked a sub-inspector of the special team with a sharp weapon. The deceased was identified as M. Jagan, a resident of Panaiyakurichi village near Sarkarpalayam.
