'Deeply Saddened': Japan PM Says As Russia, Türkiye Extend Condolences Over 261 Deaths In Odisha Train Accident

Leaders from across the world expressed their heartfelt condolences over the Odisha train accident tragedy. Russia, Japan, Türkiye have wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Following the Odisha train accident which led to the deaths of 261 people and injured about 650, leaders from across the world have been expressing their grief. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have offered their condolences to the bereaved families. Türkiye's Foreign Affairs Ministry in a statement also issued a statement in this regard. Meanwhile, a high-level probe has been ordered into the matter.

As per the Russian news agency TASS, Kremlin's website said, "Please accept our deep condolences over the tragic aftermath of the train collision in Odisha. We share the grief of those who lost their relatives and close ones in this catastrophe and we hope for speedy recovery to everyone injured."

Japanese PM Kishida in his message wrote, "I am deeply saddened by the news of the loss of many precious lives and the injuries in the train accident in the State of Odisha. On behalf of the Government of Japan and its people, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives and their bereaved families. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured."

Canada's PM said that in these difficult times, Canadians stand tall with the citizens of India. He said, “The images and reports of the train crash in Odisha, India break my heart. I’m sending my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones, and I’m keeping the injured in my thoughts. At this difficult time, Canadians are standing with the people of India.” 

Türkiye extended its condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that read, "We have learned with deep sorrow that close to 300 people lost their lives and nearly 1000 people were injured last night as a result of a train crash in Odisha, India."

"We extend our condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident as well as to the people and Government of India and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," it added.

Nepal Prime Minister 'Prachanda', who is on a four-day visit to India, tweeted, “I’m saddened by the loss of dozens of lives in a train accident in Odisha, India today. I extend deep condolences to Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji, Government, and the bereaved families in this hour of grief.” Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry expressed his grief and wished for a speedy recovery for all those affected in the accident.

Bhutan's Prime Minster Lotay Tshering tweeted, "Sending prayers to @narendramodi and the people of India as we hear developments of the tragic train crash in Odisha. May the loved ones find strength, as they come to terms with the loss and horror. We share your pain and pray for quick healing." The Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani also expressed their dismay at the tragedy.

UN General Assembly president Csaba Korosi also extended his heartfelt condolence to the families over the tragic train accident. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen also extended heartfelt condolences to the victims.

Previously, Prime Minister Modi on Friday took to Twitter to share his grief and wrote, "Distressed by the train accident in Odisha. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and took stock of the situation. Rescue ops are underway at the site of the mishap and all possible assistance is being given to those affected."
