Mumbaikars may not see a respite from incessant rains for a second day on Tuesday as the India Meteorological Department sounded a 'red' alert for the metropolis. As per the weather department, Mumbai city and suburban areas are likely to receive "extremely" heavy rainfall on Tuesday.
On Monday, the city received over 300 millimetres of rainfall in just six hours ending at 7 am causing inundation of roads and low-lying areas throwing normal life out of gear.
An elderly woman died of burn injuries caused by a short-circuit while people waded through water-logged streets and faced traffic chaos on Monday.
The University of Mumbai said that it had postponed all exams scheduled for Tuesday and the new dates will be announced soon.
"Due to heavy rain forecast in Mumbai, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all exams scheduled for today (July 9, 2024) at the University of Mumbai have been postponed. New dates will be announced soon," the university said.
Several local trains stood cancelled on Monday as the tracks submerged in water due to waterlogging. On Tuesday, the Central Railways said that the Harbour Line track was operationalised at 4:30 am after the water receded.
However, the main line both fast and slow locals were running 2-3 minutes behind schedule while the harbour line locals were running almost on time now.
Central Railway services faced disruption due to rain-induced waterlogging despite installing high-capacity pumps in low-lying areas. Several outstation trains on their way to Mumbai were also stranded.
Flight services also took a hit at Mumbai Airport due to low visibility after heavy rains and the runway operations were shut for over an hour with approximately 50 flights cancelled, as per a PTI report.
