Maharashtra Rains: Due to heavy rain warnings, all schools in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg will be closed on July 9, 2024.

Maharashtra Rains: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools in Mumbai on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in response to a heavy rain warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This comes as Mumbai on Monday recorded 101.8 mm of rainfall in nine hours. The Thane District Council has similarly declared a holiday for schools on the same date, following the IMD's heavy rain warning.

The Raigad Collector's office has also announced a holiday for all schools and colleges in Raigad district, citing the red alert issued by the IMD as a precautionary measure to protect students.

In Navi Mumbai, the municipal corporation has confirmed that all schools will remain closed on July 9 due to the impending heavy rainfall. The closure extends to schools and colleges in Panvel, as well as rural parts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. According to news agency PTI, an official stated, "Schools and colleges in these areas will remain shut on Tuesday due to the 'red alert' issued by the India Meteorological Department."

The BMC's statement, issued late on Monday evening, highlighted that all civic, government, and private schools and colleges would be closed as a precautionary measure. BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagarani urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid leaving their homes unless necessary. The BMC has placed all its disaster management teams on high alert and advised citizens to contact the disaster management cell on 1916 for any assistance, PTI reported.

Mumbai Gets 101.8 mm Of Rainfall In 9 Hours, Suburbs Only 14.8 mm

Mumbai experienced significant rainfall on Monday, with the island city recording 101.8 mm of rainfall in nine hours, nearly seven times more than its suburbs, which saw only 14.8 mm. According to PTI, Sushma Nair, a scientist at the IMD Mumbai, explained, "The Colaba weather station, which monitors the island city, registered 101.8 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, while the Santacruz weather station recorded only 14.8 mm."

Nair further noted that neighbouring Raigad district also experienced heavy rainfall, with the coastal district of Ratnagiri recording 117.9 mm. An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai until 8.30 am on Tuesday, after which it is expected to be downgraded to a yellow alert, indicating heavy showers throughout the day. Nair added, "The intensity of rain is likely to decrease on Tuesday."

The IMD has also issued an orange alert for central Maharashtra, including the ghat areas of Satara and Pune districts, and south Konkan, covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. A yellow alert has been issued for the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in these areas.
