Sixteen Maharashtra Congress leaders have written a letter to the party chief Mallikarjun Kharge seeking the removal of its Mumbai unit chief Varsha Gaikwad ahead of assembly polls in a bid to strengthen the party. In the letter dated June 16, the party leaders conveyed that they felt Gaikwad, who recently won the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha seat, would not have the time to work at the organisational level.
The party leaders also objected to her style of functioning, as per a PTI report, quoting sources as saying.
The leaders have sought time from the party leadership to discuss rejig of the party in Mumbai ahead of the assembly polls due in October this year, and civic polls which are overdue.

Rajya Sabha MP and Congress Working Committee member Chandrakant Handore, former city party chiefs Janardhan Chandurkar and Bhai Jagtap, senior leaders Naseem Khan, Suresh Shetty, Madhu Chavan, Charansingh Sapra, Zakir Ahmed and Maharashtra Congress treasurer Amarjit Manhas are among the signatories of the letter.
As per the PTI report, most of these leaders have reached Delhi to meet Kharge and senior leaders KC Venugopal and Rahul Gandhi to discuss how to strengthen the party in the city.

According to a report by the Times of India, in the letter, Handore wrote: "There is complete dissatisfaction with the current administration and a growing desire for progressive leadership have created a conducive environment for the Congress to regain its foothold in the metropolis."
"Under such circumstances, it is imperative that we focus on fortifying our organizational framework in Mumbai. This includes revitalizing local committees, enhancing coordination among party workers and effectively communicating our vision and policies to the electorate..,” the letter read further.
