New Delhi: NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule on Monday emphasised the importance of selecting a candidate like herself who prioritises addressing issues, amid speculation that her cousin Ajit Pawar is backing his wife's candidacy for the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency in Pune district on the NCP ticket. While the official candidacy remains unconfirmed, rumors suggest Sunetra Pawar may make her political debut from the Pawar stronghold.

Sule said while addressing a rally in Baramati, "I seek your votes to send me to Parliament to discuss your issues. You cannot elect a person who would sit quietly while her husband goes to Parliament and speaks. Do you ever want such a person (as a candidate)?",  reported PTI.

"If my husband visits Parliament, he cannot even enter the Lower House. He will have to sit in the canteen there waiting for me", she added, as per PTI.

This is the first time in recent weeks that Supriya Sule, daughter of Sharad Pawar, has made a subtle critique of her sister-in-law Sunetra Pawar's potential candidacy, hinting at her perceived lack of experience. She has openly addressed the issue, having previously avoided direct responses to questions regarding Sunetra Pawar's candidacy. Sule has maintained that everyone has the right to contest elections, emphasising that she will seek votes based on her own track record and contributions, reported PTI.

Supriya Sule Secured Victory In 3 Consecutive LS Elections From Baramati

Supriya Sule's electoral stronghold in Baramati, traditionally considered a bastion of the Pawar family, has seen her secure victory in three consecutive elections. However, the upcoming 2024 contest is anticipated to be different due to evolving political alliances. The entry of her cousin, Ajit Pawar, into the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena-BJP government as deputy CM alongside some MLAs last July was a major setback.

Recently, the Election Commission ruled in Ajit Pawar's favour, recognising the faction led by him as the real Nationalist Congress Party and allowing it to claim the party's clock symbol.

The EC okayed the Nationalist Congress Party- Sharadchandra Pawar as the name of the Sharad Pawar-led faction. The NCP (SP) was allotted a man blowing a traditional trumpet as its symbol. Ajit Pawar is the MLA from the Baramati assembly segment. His son Parth Pawar had unsuccessfully contested the Maval Lok Sabha constituency in the Pune district.
