New Delhi: Coming down heavily on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal over the death of the Jadavpur University student, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Saturday said that the learning ambience in educational institutions was “worsening” with each passing day and demanded that the ruling dispensation pass a law against ragging, news agency ANI reported.
Speaking to the agency, Chowdhury said, “The situation in educational institutions in West Bengal is worsening every day under the dictatorial TMC regime. An example of this is what happened at Jadavpur University. There is no law and order. We want the West Bengal government to pass a law against ragging in the state.”
Meanwhile, the Alipore Judicial Magistrate remanded three persons, who were arrested in connection with the case, to police custody till August 31, ANI reported.
Earlier last week, a 19-year-old Bengali Honours student, Swapnadip Kundu, died after reportedly falling from the second-floor of the university’s main hostel, sparking allegations of ragging in the campus.
The Congress leader on Friday had alleged that the police were dragging their feet in the matter. Terming the incident as “unfortunate”, Chowdhury had said the state administration should do everything in its power to ensure that such incidents don’t recur.
Calling for a thorough probe into the incident, Adhir Chowdhury, as quoted by ANI, had said, “This is very unfortunate. A thorough investigation should happen in the case. Stringent action should be taken so that such incidents don't recur. The police are very slow, I think they must swing into action. It is regrettable that it took such an incident for the administration to wake up to the need for more security on the campus.”
