New Delhi: Senior politician Muzaffar Hussain Baig along with his wife and DDC chairperson Baramulla, Safeena Beigh on Sunday visited the grave of People's Democratic Party (PDP) founder late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed in the Bijbehara area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district to pay tributes on his death anniversary.

Baig along with his wife reached here to pay homage to the deceased leader, who died after a brief illness on this day in 2016.

His presence at late Mufti's grave first time since 2017 indicates his patch-up with the PDP in the runup to the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

However, party spokesperson, Najam-u-Saqib said that there is no restriction on anyone to offer tributes to late Mufti. "All those who want to join us in paying tributes to Mufti Sayeed on his death anniversary are welcome," he said.

Baig, a co-founder of the PDP in the late 1990s, was made the party's patron following Sayeed's death in 2016.

A former deputy chief minister, Baig quit the party in 2020 and was tipped to join the People's Conference led by Sajad Lone.

While Baig's wife Safina joined Lone's party, the former Lok Sabha member from Baramulla did not officially announce his status.

Muzaffar Hussain Baig Rejoins PDP

Baig on Sunday rejoined the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the presence of party chief Mehbooba Mufti, sources close to PTI said.

The veteran leader joined the party during a function organised by the PDP to commemorate the eighth death anniversary of party founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to PTI sources, he also offered fatiha (special prayers) at the mausoleum of Sayeed at Bijbhera in the south Kashmir district.

"Baig has returned to the PDP," party spokesperson Mohit Bhan told PTI.

Baig's return to PDP assumes significance as it comes less than four months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

However, a formal announcement of his reentry or denial is awaited.
