2 Dead, 6 In Critical Condition After Gas Leak At Storeroom In Bengal’s Durgapur
This follows an incident in West Bengal's Burdwan district, where two people lost their lives and six others were rescued in critical conditions from a storeroom in a popular sweetmeat outlet on Monday. The fatalities were attributed to a gas leak from a cooking LPG cylinder stored in the same room. The victims were identified as Bidhan Mondal (21) and Atanu Ruidas (22), both residents of Beliatore in the Bankura district, news agency IANS reported.
IANS cited local police as indicating that the mishap likely transpired between late Sunday night and early Monday morning. "One of the employees, before falling unconscious, had sent an SOS call to the owner of the sweetmeat outlet, who immediately reached near the storeroom. However, he found the door of the storeroom locked from inside, and his repeated banging of the door failed to evoke a response," a police official said, as per IANS.
Taking swift action, the owner, with the assistance of associates, broke open the door and alerted the local police station. The bodies of the two deceased victims were recovered, while the six survivors were promptly shifted to a local hospital for urgent medical attention, IANS reported.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the gas leak, transpiring in a poorly ventilated storeroom, was the primary cause of the incident. The local authorities are conducting a thorough examination to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the leak.
Meanwhile, further details are awaited for the incident in Vadodara as the injured workers are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
