Delhi-NCR: NCCF To Sell Tomatoes At Subsidised Rates After Prices Surged Upto Rs 100 Per Kg — Details

To counter soaring tomato prices in Delhi-NCR, NCCF will sell tomatoes at Rs 60 per kg from July 29 to ease the financial burden on consumers.

In a bid to alleviate the impact of soaring tomato prices, the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) will start selling tomatoes at a subsidised rate of Rs 60 per kilogram in the Delhi-NCR region from Monday, July 29, 2024. This initiative aims to provide relief to consumers facing high food costs due to recent supply disruptions.

The subsidised tomatoes will be available at various locations, including Krishi Bhawan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Colony, Hauz Khas, Parliament Street, INA Market, as well as in Noida, Rohini, and Gurugram, according to a statement from the NCCF, news agency PTI reported.

The rise in tomato prices has been significant, with the Consumer Affairs Ministry reporting a retail price of Rs 77 per kg in Delhi as of July 27, 2024. In some areas, prices have surpassed Rs 80 per kg, depending on the quality and locality. The NCCF's intervention is expected to stabilise the market and ease the financial burden on consumers.

Delhi NCR: Tomato Prices Surged Upto Rs 100 Per Kg

This measure comes in response to a sharp increase in tomato prices, which surged to Rs 100 per kg in retail markets of the national capital last week. The rise has been attributed to adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat followed by heavy rainfall, which have disrupted supply chains across the country.

Data from the Department of Consumer Affairs indicates that the retail price of tomatoes in Delhi was Rs 93 per kg on July 20, 2024, while the all-India average price was Rs 73.76 per kg. "Prices of tomato, potato, and onion are ruling high in Delhi and some other cities. Extreme heat followed by spells of excess rainfall disrupted supplies, causing a spike in prices in consuming areas," said a senior official from the department, as per PTI.

At present, Mother Dairy's Safal retail outlets are selling tomatoes at Rs 100 per kg in the national capital. Other vegetable prices have also risen, with onions priced at Rs 46.90 per kg and potatoes at Rs 41.90 per kg at Mother Dairy stores in West Delhi, Hindustan Times reported. Government data reflects that onions are priced at Rs 50 per kg and potatoes at Rs 40 per kg in Delhi, while the all-India average prices are Rs 44.16 per kg for onions and Rs 37.22 per kg for potatoes.
