Delhi Education Minister Atishi on Wednesday was greeted with slogans of "we want justice" and "go back" as she visited Old Rajinder Nagar in New Delhi on Wednesday to meet the protesting students, who have been demanding action, following the death of three civil services aspirants in a water-logged basement at a coaching centre four days ago. While there, Atishi assured the students of government support and said that action will be taken on the basis of the inquiry report.
She also noted down names of ten student representatives, who will become a part of a panel to draft a law to regulate coaching institutes in Delhi.
The protesting students told news agency PTI that a coordination committee comprising 15 members has been formed to decide the future course of the protest.
Atishi was accompanied by Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi and MLA Durgesh Pathak during her meeting with students.
"Give us names of 10 students who will sit with us and help us frame laws for regulation of such institutes. All your issues regarding brokerage, rent, electricity will be taken into consideration. After you give us the 10 names, the committee will take a month to prepare a draft of the law that we will share with you," Atishi told the students as she sat with them during the protest.
Atishi also asserted that there should be no politics over the issue and stressed that the Delhi government will set up a temporary office in the area for students, where they can share their grievances till the law is drafted, PTI reported.
Education Minister of Delhi Atishi, Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, Development Minister Gopal Rai, and Mayor Shelly Oberoi had also interacted with the students at the Delhi Secretariat today.
"We met a lot of aspirants in the Delhi Secretariat. They called us here and asked us to meet the students. The law that the Delhi Government is going to bring, we have come here to talk about it with the UPSC aspirants. We have come here to talk about the demands of the students," Atishi told reporters.
Following the incident, the agitated students are demanding improved safety measures at several coaching centres that pose a threat to their lives, among other issues.
Addressing the students at the protest site, the Delhi Minister said: "Let the inquiry report come. If we take action without the inquiry report, those who are guilty will be saved. I have given (officials) seven days to make this report...We will take action against the guilty based on the report."
BJP Leader Jaya Prada Meets Students At Protest Site
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jaya Prada also reached the protest site in Old Rajinder Nagar to meet the protesting students.
"...You all are like our children. I am here for you and to talk to you...I am here to assure all of you that strict action will be ensured against those who are responsible behind the deat of three students," she said.
The former MP and actress was however, interrupted and not allowed to speak much as the protesting students raised slogans like "we want justice".
Till now, five people, including four co-owners of the building's basement have been arrested.
The SUV driver, who drove through the flooded street, which caused the water to breach the gates of the building, has also been arrested.
