Supaul, Bihar: A five-year-old boy carried a gun with him to his school in Bihar and shot at another student, leaving him injured. The incident occurred at St Jospeh School in north Bihar's Supaul district on Wednesday.
The five-year-old boy, a nursery student, had hidden the firearm in his school bag. As he reached school, he opened fire at a 10-year-old boy, who studied in in Class 3, during the assembly session at around 9 AM, police told news agency IANS.
The injured student is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital and is out of danger.
According to Superintendent of Police, Shaishav Yadav, the bullet hit the other student's arm, following which he was rushed to a hospital.
"We are trying to find out how the boy got to lay his hands on the firearm and managed to carry it to the private school, which is situated in Lalpatti area, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Triveniganj police station in the district," Yadav said.
“It is the initial period of investigation, and we will conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain whether it is a licensed weapon. Appropriate action will be taken following the investigation", Yadav was quoted by IANS.
Police Looking For Boy And His Father, Principal Arrested
The SP further stated that the police are also asking schools across the district to check the bags of students thoroughly on a regular basis.
"The incident has caused much anxiety among parents and guardians," he added.
As per a report by NDTV, the boy who said that he did not have any fight with the boy.
"I was going to my class when he took out a gun from his bag and shot at me. As I tried to stop him, he fired at my hand," the boy, who is admitted in a hospital, said in a video.
The principal of the school has been arrested and is now being questioned by the police as to how such an incident took place, NDTV reported.
The police is also looking for the student who fired and his father. As per IANS, both of them fled after the teachers recovered the weapon and called them to school. The weapon was placed on a table while a discussion was underway. The boy's father seized the opportunity and grabbed the weapon and his son and fled from the school on a bike.
As the parents of other students got to know about the incident, they gathered at the school and staged a protest, IANS reported.
The SP stated that the police were trying to pacify the parents since the incident had raised concerns over the school’s security measures and their children's safety.
"At present, efforts are underway to calm down the agitating parents, with adequate security forces deployed to restore normalcy in the area," IANS quoted SP Yadav as saying.
The SP assured that action will be taken against the school administration in view of the security lapse.
