New Delhi: Two accused, who allegedly shot dead a police constable in Bihar, were killed in Police firing when they tried to escape from custody while being moved on Monday.

Earlier in the day, bike-borne assailants shot dead a police constable in the Vaishali district. The incident took place when Amitabh Kumar, posted at Sarai police station, was checking vehicles near UCO bank at Sarai Bazar Chowk, reported IANS.

Superintendent of Police Ravi Ranjan said the 35-year-old constable was fired upon by the two assailants at Ekra, close to the highway connecting Hajipur, the district headquarters, to Muzaffarpur, the divisional headquarters.

He was rushed to a hospital where he breathed his last.

The SP said the attackers, identified as Bittu Kumar and Upendra Kumar, tried to flee on the way to the police station by jumping out of the vehicle.

They continued to run even after being hit by bullets fired by the police to stop them. Local villagers, who heard the gunshots, caught the two criminals and handed them over to the police.

Both the attackers succumbed to injuries at a hospital, added the SP.

Describing the incident, Ramesh Kumar, the driver of the police van said, "While checking the vehicles, Kumar signalled three men on a bike to stop came. Instead of stopping, they left the bike and tried to flee. Some of the cops, including Amitabh Kumar, chased them. At this, one of the miscreants opened fire on the police team," reported IANS.

"Amitabh Kumar, came under the firing range. He suffered two gunshot wounds on his chest and collapsed. We immediately rushed him to Sadar hospital where doctors referred him to a private hospital. Kumar succumbed to his injuries," Kumar added.

Reacting to the incident, JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar said, "This incident occurred at Sarai Thana during a bank withdrawal, resulting in the unfortunate shooting of a policeman. The accused have been arrested, and an ongoing investigation is underway. This incident is undoubtedly a challenging situation, considering that such criminal activity took place in broad daylight. Orders have been issued to thoroughly investigate the matter."

This is the second incident when a police officer became the victim of criminals. Earlier, a SHO Nand Kishore Yadav of Mohanpur OP, Samastipur was gunned down by cattle smugglers in August.
