Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat clinched his first Olympics bronze medal and India’s sixth overall at the Paris Olympics 2024 as he defeated Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz 13-5 in the bronze medal match of the men’s 57 kg wrestling event at the Games on August 9 (Friday). This also marked India’s eighth at the Olympics in wrestling.

In a thrilling bout, Cruz initially took a 1-0 lead by pushing Sehrawat out of bounds, but Sehrawat quickly responded with a takedown to lead 2-1. The match was highly competitive, with both wrestlers showing aggression. Cruz briefly led 3-2 before Sehrawat reclaimed the lead at 4-3. Sehrawat maintained his aggressive approach, extending his lead to 10-5. In the final minute, Sehrawat dominated Cruz, securing a decisive 13-5 victory to win the bronze medal.

After the match, speaking to JioCinema, Aman Sehrawat expressed his joy the win saying, "Although the scores were level in the initial phase of the bout, the scales tipped over in my favour as the game went on. I would like to dedicate this win to my mother, father and the whole nations."

In the buildup to the bronze medal match, Sehrawat's results were extreme in nature. While he registered wins over North Macedonia's Vladimir Egorov (10-0) and Albanian wrestler Zelimkhan Abakarov (12-0) through technical superiority, he succumbed to a defeat too by conceding a 10-point lead to Japan's Rei Higuchi, implying a win by technincal superiority for his opponent on that occasion.
