Controversy struck WPL 2023 hours before the first match of tournament's history, played between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Giants (GG) on Saturday. Just a day before the tournament opener, Gujarat Giants, on Friday, announced that West Indies' power-hitter Deandra Dottin would be replaced by Australian star Kim Garth because of a 'medical condition'.
A massive controversy erupted after Dottin, a few hours ahead of GG vs MI WPL 2023 match, revealed she is absolutely healthy. "I really appreciate all the messages but truth be told I’m recovering from nothing but the Holy Ghost anointing thank you," tweeted Dottin.
She also took to Instagram, replying to a 'Get well soon' message and wrote: "Get Well Soon from what may I ask."
Gujarat Giants put an end to the controversy
Gujarat Giants, on Sunday, issued a statement, saying they weren't able to get Deandra's medical clearance before the required deadline for WPL 2023. However, the franchise did not specify her medical issue.
"Deandra is a world-class player and a wonderful signing for the franchise. Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain a medical clearance before the defined deadline for this season.
"Such clearances are a requirement of all the players participating in the WPL. We look forward to seeing her return to the field soon. Subject to the clearance of her medical report, she will be a part of the Gujarat Giants squad in the upcoming seasons," added Gujarat Giants.
