Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) produced an exciting contest when the two teams faced off in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (April 21). In a match that went all the way down to the wire, it was KKR who eventually won the match by 1 run and moved to the second place on the points table.

However, in an umpiring decision that grabbed attention from the match, Virat Kohli was deemed out on a high full-toss. While Kohli and his non-striking partner reckoned that it should have been a no-ball, the third umpire and the technology showed that it was a fair delivery and Kohli, who was looking good at that stage and had already scored 18 off 6 balls before this delivery, had to walk back to the pavilion.

New Hawk-Eye Technology In Play During Virat Kohli's Dismissal

The important thing to note was that Kohli was outside his crease when he hit that ball straight back to the bowler. The TV umpire Michael Gough did check for then new ball but the New Hawk-Eye technology, which also checks the trajectory of the ball, suggested that the ball would have passed the batter at 0.92 metres from the ground, had the batter been at a normal upright position at the crease.

On the other hand, Kohli's waist height had already been measured before the start of the tournament at 1.04 metres. That means the trajectory of the ball was below Kohli's waist height, making the Harshit Rana delivery on which Kohli was deemed out, a legal delivery. While both Kohli and Du Plessis initially thought it was a no-ball, with Kohli even having a word with the umpires, post the match Du Plessis seemed to have understood the rule.

"It was crazy, rules are rules, Virat and myself thought that the ball was higher than the waist, I guess they measured from the popping crease," he said while talking to Harsha Bhogle after the match. This was RCB's sixth IPL 2024 defeat in a row as they remain at the botton of the points table with 2 points from 8 matches.
