Emerging Sri Lankan cricket talent, Matheesha Pathirana, has been showcasing exceptional skills in the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023, where he is currently sharing the top spot for the highest wicket-taker with his remarkable sling action. The young fast bowler has attributed his prowess in T20 cricket to the guidance he received from former Indian captain, MS Dhoni.

Having played under Dhoni's leadership in the Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings, the 20-year-old expressed how this experience significantly shaped his growth.

"Having someone of such stature instill confidence in you as a young player is a tremendous boost for your career. Dhoni's belief in my abilities made me feel capable of achieving anything at that moment. His trust extended not only to me but to all of us youngsters. This was particularly admirable when several top players were sidelined due to injuries," Pathirana remarked.

Furthermore, he shared valuable insights gained from Dhoni.

"From Dhoni, I learned humility, a key factor in his success. Despite being 42, he remains the fittest cricketer, a truly inspiring trait. When I joined the team (CSK), I was relatively unknown, and their training and guidance contributed significantly to my growth. Now, I have a clear understanding of excelling in any T20 match and effectively managing my four overs. Dhoni advised me that by maintaining physical fitness and avoiding injuries, I can contribute significantly to the team and the nation," he added.

The influence of another sports superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, is also evident in Pathirana's approach. "Cristiano Ronaldo's fame is global, and I'm an admirer of his football skills. Hence, I've adopted his unique celebration as my own," he revealed.

Pathirana's outstanding performance in the LPL 2023 has seen him claim 12 wickets. He shared a special encounter with his idol, Lasith Malinga, stating, "I'm continually refining my bowling technique and action. Malinga expressed his satisfaction upon meeting me, seeing a resemblance in our styles."

Niroshan Dickwella leads the Colombo Strikers, while other LPL teams include Dambulla Aura led by Kusal Mendis, Galle Titans captained by Dasun Shanaka, B-Love Kandy under Wanindu Hasaranga's captaincy, and defending champions Jaffna Kings led by experienced Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera.
