Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have strategically revamped their squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season through the auction, assembling a robust team of 25 players, including 8 overseas talents. Their aim has been to ensure a well-rounded composition, covering all aspects of the game.
Post the IPL 2024 auction at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai, CSK emerged as one of the most contented franchises, securing quality players at bargain prices. Rachin Ravindra, anticipated to fetch a high price, joined CSK for a mere Rs 1.8 crore. The acquisition of Shardul Thakur for 4 crores and the notable signings of Daryl Mitchell (Rs 14 crore) and emerging talent Sameer Rizvi (Rs 8.4 crores) were pivotal for the team.
The void in the middle-order, particularly after Ambati Rayudu's retirement, was a priority for CSK. Daryl Mitchell's inclusion at no.4 aims to address this need. However, Rachin Ravindra might find it challenging to secure an opening spot with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway forming a stable pair at the top, potentially limiting his playing time.
Coach Stephen Fleming highlighted Mitchell's significance, emphasising his capabilities over the past 18-24 months, especially against spin, making him a valuable asset. “Daryl is a different type of player, but his performances over the last 18-24 months have warranted this price. He is an unfashionable player and often goes under the radar. With his ability to play spin, he is competitive and a handy bowler,” stated Fleming.
Ajinkya Rahane would retain his no.3 spot, showcasing his aggressive IPL 2023 style. Shivam Dube would follow Mitchell at no.5, supported by Sameer Rizvi. Both are adept at handling spin and adept at launching an onslaught of sixes in the middle overs.
Shardul Thakur's addition bolsters CSK's bowling attack, allowing Mitchell to substitute for Ambati Rayudu. Thakur's flexibility provides extra options in the bowling lineup, with Matheesha Pathirana as the primary death bowler, Deepak Chahar excelling in powerplays, and Maheesh Thikshana partnering with Ravindra Jadeja in spin duties.
