An outstanding bowling performance by bowlers after a gritty knock from Rahul Tripathi (81 runs off 51 balls) powered Kolkata Knight Riders to a run win against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday at Abu Dhabi. With this win, KKR are now placed at the third position on the points table.

Chasing 168 to win, veteran openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis came out in the middle to begin CSK's chase and for KKR Pat Cummins opened the bowling attack.

Chennai were off to a good start in chase. Both openers were scoring regular boundaries and also kept dealing in ones and twos to keep the scoreboard ticking and pressure high on KKR bowlers. At the end of first three overs, CSK reached 25 for loss on no wicket.

With a very less total to defend, KKR now desperately needed a breakthrough. Chennai suffered a big blow and it was youngster Shivam Mavi who drew the first blood to dismiss in-form Faf du Plessis (17 runs off 10 balls), who edged the pull behind to wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik.

Shane Watson continued to wreak havoc by hitting fours and sixes to bring up Chennai's fifty with a six over backward square leg off Shivam Mavi and at the end of powerplay CSK were 54/1.

Just halfway through, the fifty-run stand between Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu for the second wicket came up without Narine bowling a single over.

Nagarkoti gave Kolkata the much-needed wicket by departing Rayudu for a well-made and he had to walk back to the dugout. 100 came up for Chennai in 12.3 overs and skipper MS Dhoni was the new man in.

Meanwhile, Aussie great Shane Watson scored yet another half-century off 39 balls, his 21st in IPL. However, just after enjoying back-to-back fifties in the T20 tournament, Narine, who was bowling just his second over, trapped Watson in front of the stumps for LBW out.

Sam Curran was the new man in. KKR made a good comeback in the middle overs as they were not only economical but also dismissed well-set batsmen. In the last five overs, Chennai needed 58 runs to win the game.

Just when it seemed that one of the world's best finishers MS Dhoni would finish the game easily, the two-time World Cup winning skipper missed the ball and Varun Chakravarthy hit the stumps successfully to give KKR the much-needed breakthrough.

Kedar Jadhav replaced Mahi in the middle with 44 required off last 24 balls. The first ball of the 18th over caused another big jolt to CSK's hope of winning the game as another set batsman, the dangerous Sam Curran, was removed by Andre Russell for 17.

Ravindra Jadeja and Kedar Jadhav tried their best in the death overs to help their team win the game but in the end it was KKR who emerged victorious and handed a 10-run defeat to Chennai Super Kings.
