IPL 2023: In what comes as a huge setback for five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners Mumbai Indians (MI), after premier premier Jasprit Bumrah, Jhye Richardson too has been ruled out of IPL 2023. The pacer was earlier ruled out of IND vs AUS ODI series due to hamstring issues which led to doubts over him participating in this year's IPL. However, on Saturday, Richardson took to social media to confirm that he has undergone surgery and is set to stay out for a few months. The pacer has kept himself away from the cricketing field since January 2023. Last week, he returned to action in club cricket but was in discomfort.

"Injuries are a big part of cricket, thats a fact. Frustrating? Absolutely. But I’m now in a scenario where I can get back to doing what I love and work bloody hard to become an even better player than before. One step back, two steps forward. Let’s do this," Richardson wrote in his tweet.

Mumbai Indians (MI) had bought Jhye Richardson in IPL 2023 auction for his base price of INR 1.5 crore. The Australian pacer had suffered a hamstring injury on January 4 during the Big Bash League (BBL). Richardson, who made his debut for Australia in 2017, has been struggling due to injuries all throughout his career. So far, he has played 18 T20Is, 3 Tests and 15 ODIs for his national team.

Mumbai Indians is yet to announce Bumrah and Richardson's replacements for IPL 2023. Rohit Sharma-led MI will kick off their IPL 16 campaign on April 2 with a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
