Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered an emphatic win against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday. They won the match by seven wickets and almost five overs to spare. Despite a clinical performance, KKR captain, Eoin Morgan has been charged a whopping ₹24 lakhs for maintaining a slow over-rate. Rest of the players from the playing XI will be charged Rs 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their individual match fee
The Indian Premier League (IPL) told this in a statement. Eoin Morgan was penalized as this was the second instance of slow over-rate this season by KKR.
"The Kolkata Knight Riders have been fined after they maintained a slow over rate during their VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match against Mumbai Indians at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi on September 23," read a statement by IPL.
They also explained the reason behind the same. "As it was the team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan was fined Rs 24 lakhs."
"The rest of the members of the playing XI were each fined lesser of either Rs 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their individual match fee," the statement added.
Kolkata Knight Riders, with this win, has taken the fourth spot that belonged to the Mumbai Indians before this game. The tournament is entering its business end. Teams like KKR, RR, MI, and PBKS are in the same fray and have almost an equal opportunity to qualify for the playoffs.
