New Delhi: In an official statement issued, BCCI said, "The Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in an emergency meeting have unanimously decided to postpone the IPL 2021 season, with "immediate effect." Mumbai Indians released a video on social media where the players are seen lauding the steps taken by IPL Governing Council.

The video read: "Paltan, thank you for your unrelenting support throughout the tournament! Till we meet again, we hope you keep staying safe and strong."

In the video, Rohit Sharma is heard saying, "It's unfortunate that the tournament has been postponed. But in light of everything that is happening around the country, I think it's a very good decision. It's very, very important that we look after each other. It's a very serious matter so please follow all the protocols and guidelines and stay disciplined."

Before the IPL was suspended Mumbai Indians played the Chennai Super Kings and defeated them by chasing 219 runs courtesy of brilliant innings by Keiron Pollard. They were at number 4 in the points table and were looking good as the tournament progressed.

"The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff, and the other participants involved in organizing the IPL. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health, and well-being of all the stakeholders in mind," the release said.

"These are difficult times, especially in India and while we have tried to bring in some positivity and cheer, however, it is imperative that the tournament is now suspended and everyone goes back to their families and loved ones in these trying times," the statement added.
