In a significant development, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) has taken the decisive step of suspending the Russian Olympic Committee. This suspension comes into effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice. The suspension follows a unilateral decision made by the Russian Olympic Committee on October 5, 2023. The decision involved including regional sports organizations under the authority of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine. Specifically, these regions include Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia.

The IOC contends that this action by the Russian Olympic Committee represents a clear violation of the Olympic Charter. It is perceived as undermining the territorial integrity of the NOC of Ukraine, a status officially recognized by the IOC in accordance with the Olympic Charter.

The official statement released by the IOC makes it clear that The Russian Olympic Committee will be losing its status as a National Olympic Committee, as defined within the Olympic Charter. Consequently, it will no longer be entitled to function as such and won't be receiving any funding from the Olympic Movement either.

Meanwhile, the IOC upholds its earlier position and recommendations, issued on March 28, 2023. As per these guidelines, the IOC retains the authority to determine the participation of individual neutral athletes holding Russian passports in future Olympic Games. Specifically, this pertains to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. However, these decisions will be made at the appropriate time. The IOC Executive Board preserves the right to take additional actions or measures based on the evolving developments in this situation, confirmed an official statement from the IOC.
