India's challenge in the  2020 US Open remained intact as Rohan Bopanna and his Canadian partner Denis Shapovalov advanced to the second round in the men's doubles section of the US Open at Flushing Meadows on Friday. The Indo Canadian pair registered a 6-2 6-4 straight-set win over the American duo of Ernesto Escobedo and Noah Rubin and advanced to the next round of the grand slam.

Meanwhile, Bopanna's Canadian partner Shapovalov who is the 12th seed in the men's singles draw progresses to the fourth round after beating American Taylor Fritz in a marathon 5 set encounter. The 21 year old Canadian staged a brilliant comeback from two sets down to beat 19- seed  Fritz 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, and march into the round of sixteen.

The Indo-Canadian pair will next lock horns with sixth seeds Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies. Bopanna is the lone surviving Indian in the grand slam after Sumit Nagal crashed out of the men's singles losing to second seed Dominic Thiem and Divij Sharan faltered in his second-round men's doubles encounter at the US Open.

Bopanna and Shapovalov who have been consistently pairing on the ATP World Tour since the Indian Wells Master did not have the perfect build-up to the US Open as they crashed out in the opening round at the Western and Southern Open (Master Series) tournament in Cincinnati.
