Teachers Day 2020: India celebrates its hard-working educators today and since most educational institutes are shut due to the pandemic, students across the country are looking at new ways to honour their favourite teachers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also shared his greeting for the and tweeted 'we remain grateful to the hardworking teachers for their contributions towards shaping minds and building our nation.'

He has also shared snippets from his recent Mann Ki Baat in which he has talked about how teachers deepen our connection with our nation’s history. Education Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has also shared his wishes and even a video for the day.


On this day President Ram Nath Kovind will also confer 47 teachers with the National Teachers' Awards in a virtual ceremony.

Here are four things to know about the day

  • Teacher's Day is being celebrated in India every year on September 5th since 1962

  • The day marks the birthday of the First Vice President and second President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was beloved by his students which is why when he was asked by some students whether they could celebrate his birthday, he "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege, if 5th September is observed as Teachers' day”.

  •  An exemplary teacher, philosopher, scholar, and politician, Dr.Radhakrishnan was nominated 27 times for Nobel Prize and was honoured with India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, in 1954 for his contribution towards the nation.

  • Teacher’s Day is also observed on Guru Purnima in the Hindu month of Ashadha which falls in June-July. It is observed on the full moon day of the month, to celebrate spiritual and academic Gurus, who were ready to share their wisdom with very little or no monetary expectation, based on Karma Yoga. Guru Purnima was observed by Buddhists, Hindus, and Jains it is also observed in Nepal.
