FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: The team of 129 referees, assistant referees and video match officials who will be overseeing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 arrived in the capital Doha Thursday. FIFA president Gianni Infantino welcomed the ‘Team One’, as they are lovingly labelled, and called them “the most important team in the tournament” as he kicked off their official training camp, FIFA said Wednesday.
Infantino addressed ‘Team One’ at a seminar where he stressed on the role “FIFA’s team” will play in the tournament. “You are our team and you are actually the most important team in the tournament because without you there is no football; there is no FIFA World Cup,” he said, adding: “We need Team One to enter the pitch first. We need Team One to kick off the first game on 20th November, and we need Team One to stop the last game and award the title to the World Champions.”
According to an article on the official FIFA website, the FIFA chief told the team to “both savour the moment and to believe in themselves”.
The 129-member team — 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 match officials — include six female match officials, for the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
“There are, for the first time, six women as well, present. But whether men or women, it’s referees. For us, for me, we are all part of the same team,” Infantino was quoted as saying.
The list of team members was announced in May this year. The FIFA Referees Committee had then said the selection was made based on the quality and the performances they delivered at FIFA and other international and domestic tournaments in recent years.
The day of orientation for ‘Team One’ Thursday also saw sessions on health and fitness, VAR and assistive technologies, and decision making, the FIFA article said.
