Paris Saint-Germain consolidated their lead at the top of the Ligue 1 points table as they register a rather convincing 3-1 win over Montpellier in the end on Wednesday. However, it wasn't as clinical a performance as they would have liked as their talismanic striker Kylian Mbappe missed as many as two penalties in two minutes before leaving the field after sustaining an injury.
While the FIFA World 2022's leading goal-scorer's 8th minute penalty was first saved by the Montpellier goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, the referee signalled a retake. In the second attempt too, Mbappe's shot was saved by Lecomte and while the 24-year-old did have a chance to go for it again on the rebound, his shot went over the crossbar.
Mbappe limped off due to an injury against Montpellier
Not much later after missing the penalty, Mbappe walked off the field with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. This could be a massive blow to the side as they are set to take on Bayern Munich in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich later this month.
PSG coach Christophe Galtier, however, is not too worried at the moment.
"He took a knock to the back of the knee or the back of the thigh, so we'll see," said Galtier after the match.
"I'm not too worried. It's a bruise or a contusion, we don't know yet," he added.
"With the run of matches we don't want to take risks with a very busy fixture list, but it doesn't appear that serious."
It is pertinent to note that PSG were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Real Madrid last season where they the La Liga greats came back from behind to stun them in the second leg. The French side would definitely not want a repeat of the last season.
