Globe Soccer Awards: Portuguese superstar footballer Cristiano Ronaldo as sparked yet another controversy with his remarks at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai. The Saudi Pro League-based club Al Nassr's forward  made a baffling remark, stating that the French league (Ligue 1) is inferior to the Saudi Pro League. Ironically, Ligue 1 is one of the highest rated leagues in the world, whereas, Saudi Pro League doesn't even make a cut into Top 50, as per the FIFA's coefficient rankings of the domestic leagues worldwide.

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged three individual awards at the ceremony as he was the leading goal scorer for the calendar year 2023, surpassing the likes of Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe. He had scored 53 goals. However, the Portuguese footballer made some interesting comments during the ceremony in Dubai.


“Manchester City did amazing. Congratulations on their season. Players, coach. Superb. Finally they win the Champions League, they probably deserved it two years ago. I enjoy seeein them playing,” said Cristiano Ronaldo when asked about the best club of the year, Manchester City.


“Manchester City have good chance to win the Champions League again. Favorites? Man City, Real Madrid, Bayern…,” added Al Nassr forward.


Cristiano endured a tough time period during his second stint at Manchester United but however, has find his footing at Al Nassr.


“I feel so happy at Al Nassr, it’s great move. Saudi is in a process, it will take long… but step by step they will go to the top level. I think Saudi Pro League will be among top three leagues in the world. People in Saudi will be proud,” said the 5-time Ballon d'Or winner.


 


Erling Haaland won the Player of the Year Award after winning the treble and five trophies overall with Manchester City in 2023.
