Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Brazil's superstar footballer Neymar Jr. is set to miss the remainder of the season with the 31-year-old set to undergo a surgery. The surgery is required to heal the ankle ligaments of the player and will keep him out of action at least for the next three months. The same has been confirmed by Ligue 1.

The Parisian star has netted as many as 13 goals and 11 assists in this Ligue 1 season. However, he has been out of action since the injury he sustained during the team's 4-3 win over Lille in February missing the club's most recent appearences.

"Neymar Jr. has had several episodes of instability in his right ankle in recent years," the French League said in an official statement.

"Following his last sprain contracted on Feb. 20, the medical staff ... recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All the experts consulted have confirmed this necessity," their statement added.

"A delay of three to four months is expected before his return to training," it said.

Following the confirmation of him being ruled out of the remaining season, the former Barcelona star took to social media to a message. Along with a picture of himself he wrote, "I'll come back stronger 🙏."

Meanwhile, PSG have confirmed that Neymar will receive the medical treatment in Doha, Qatar.

As far as the league standings are concerned, PSG continue to enjoy an eight-point lead over Marseille who are second on the table. However, their immediate focus will be on their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 game where they trail 0-1 after losing by that scoreline in the first-leg of the competition.

Kingslay Coman's 53rd minute goal had proved to be enough to help the German club secure in a win in the first leg.
