'No Beer, Drugs Or Revealing Clothes': Qatar Issues Strict Guidelines For FIFA World Cup 2022

2022 FIFA World Cup has been mired in controversies due to host Qatar's 'strict' nature of laws which put the fans and players at a serious risk of landing in jail. Millions of fans from 31 nations are expected to visit Qatar to watch the tournament. However, it is highly likely that the fans visiting the regressive Islamic country will get into trouble if they won't 'obey the law'.

Before the sporting action unfolds, fans await a big challenge as the local government has urged fans to "respect Qatar’s cultural and legal norms". Qatar's customs and laws include regulations on alcohol, drugs, sexuality, and dress code. Qatar has some extremely conservative rules when it comes to clothing. Tourists might be forced to reconsider traveling to the Muslim majority nation, keeping in mind restrictions the local government has put in place, especially on clothing.

According to a report in Dailystar, fans coming to Qatar from other countries have been asked to cover their midriff and shoulders. Women should dress modestly and those wearing skirts and dresses must cover their knees and shoulders. Men are not allowed to take off their t-shirts completely, else they will be fined or even jailed. Also, wearing sleeveless and 'objectionable' slogan t-shirts is not allowed.

“Attitudes towards dressing in Qatar are relaxed, but visitors (men as well as women) are expected to show respect for the local culture by avoiding excessively revealing clothes in public. It is generally recommended for men and women to ensure their shoulders and knees are covered,” read a statement issued by Qatar Tourism on their website.

Things boiled over more on Thursday after Qatar dramatically announced a complete ban on sale and consumption of beer around eight stadiums where matches of the football tournament will be held. Notably, selling alcohol is largely restricted in Qatar.

The first match of 2022 FIFA World Cup will be played on Sunday, November 20, between hosts Qatar and Ecuador.
