Erling Haaland, the talented striker from Manchester City, was crowned as the Premier League Player of the Season on Saturday (May 27), following an exceptional debut campaign. Throughout the season, Haaland showcased his remarkable scoring prowess, finding the back of the net 36 times in 35 matches, ultimately playing a pivotal role in securing Manchester City's third consecutive title under the guidance of Pep Guardiola. In achieving this feat, Haaland surpassed the previous record of 34 goals in a single Premier League season, held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer for almost thirty years.
The award was determined through a collective voting process that involved the general public, the captains of all 20 Premier League clubs, and a panel of esteemed football experts. This recognition marks the fourth consecutive year that a Manchester City player has claimed this prestigious title, with Kevin De Bruyne winning it in 2019-20 and 2021-22, and Ruben Dias securing the honour in 2020-21.
Haaland triumphed over strong competition from fellow contenders such as De Bruyne, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard from Arsenal, Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur, Kieran Trippier from Newcastle United and Marcus Rashford from Manchester United.
This wasn't the only award that Haaland bagged as he also won the Premier League young player of the season, becoming the first-ever player to win both in the same season. Following being announced the winner of these awards, the 22-year-old took to Twitter to share a message of gratitude for his fans, family and teammates.
"Proud and humbled to become the first-ever footballer to win both the Premier League Player of the Season and Premier League Young Player of the Season. Thanks to my family, fans, teammates and the whole staff for this! 🏆 ➕ 🏆 @ManCity @premierleague," he tweeted.
Furthermore, Haaland received the prestigious accolade of the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year, securing an unprecedented 82% of the votes. As the season draws to a close, Haaland will have an opportunity to increase his goal tally in the Premier League when Manchester City faces Brentford in their last match on Sunday.
