During the first half, 37-year-old Messi collided with Colombian defender Santiago Arias while trying for a cross, resulting in an injury to his right ankle. Medical staff rushed onto the field to assess him, and after a brief check, he returned to play. However, his injured ankle troubled him again in the second half. This time, the medical team decided to take him off the field and Nicolas Gonzalez came on as his replacement. Messi left the field in tears, unable to continue in Argentina's final against Colombia.
