Serie A club AS Roma have sacked manager Jose Mourinho with immediate effect with the Italian side languishing at the ninth position in the Italian League. Mourinho who has coached teams like Manchester United and Chelsea in the past, had taken charge at the club in May 2021. He even led Roma to the Europa Conference League title in 2022 before the team made it to the Europa League final in the subsequent year.

However, Mourinho has been shown the exit door with his team five points off Series A's final Champions League qualifying spot with matches running out. They were even knocked out of the Coppa Italia earlier this month by none other than their city rivals Lazio which was a massive blow to the club.

We Would Like To Thank Jose Mourinho For His Passion And Efforts: Club Owners

Meanwhile, the club owners have formally thanked Mourinho for his services and said that they will always have great memories of his tenure at the club.

"We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club," club owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said as per an official statement.

"We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club," the statement added.

"We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours," they further said.

As of now Roma have 29 points from 20 matches with 9 wins, 4 draws and 7 losses. Their goal difference stands at 8. Although there is no clarity yet on who can succeed Mourinho as the manager, an official statement noted: "Further updates on the new First Team coaching staff will follow imminently."
