Frank Lampard Returns To Chelsea As 'Caretaker Manager' Until End Of Season

Frank Lampard's appointment comes days after the sacking of Graham Potter.

Former Chelsea player and boss Frank Lampard has been returns to the club in the capacity of a "caretaker manager" until the end of the season. The same has been confirmed in a statement by the club on Thursday. The development comes days after the sacking of their previous boss Graham Potter.

Notably, Lampard was out of a managerial role since January when he was removed by Chelsea's Premier League rivals Everton. The 44-year-old who happens to be the club's record goal-scorer had previously been at the helm of affairs of the Blues from July 2019 to January 2021.

With Lampord's appointment at the Stamford Bridge confirmed, Chelsea would be looking for a quick turnaround as they find themselves at the 11th position in the Premier League before their away game against Wolves on Saturday.

Even from the UEFA Champions League qualification mark, they are some distance away as fourth-placed Manchester United are currently 14 points ahead of them despite having had a busy transfer window. Having said that, they have had a good run in the Champions League this season and are already through to the quarterfinals where they will meet Real Madrid in the first leg on Wednesday.

"We want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season," an official statement from the club read.

"We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line," it added.

Lampard, a club legend, enjoyed a resonably successful stint as the boss and oversaw The Blues which secured a fourth-place finish as well as the FA Club final despite a transfer fan on the club. However, his next seson after the transfer ban had been lifted didn't live up to the standard he had set for himself and with the club winning just two of their last eight games with the team languishing at the ninth position which was the situation that led to his sacking.
