Costa Rica on Sunday kept their Fifa World Cup hopes alive as they beat Japan 1-0 in their Group E match in Qatar. The victory came after Costa Rica suffered a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Spain on Wednesday.


The lone goal was scored by Keysher Fuller in the 81st minute. With one win and one loss, Costa Rica are placed at No. 3 on the Group E table behind Japan, which also has a win and a loss to its name but is ahead on the Goals Scored count. Spain leads the table, winning the only match it has played in the mega event so far.


Meanwhile, Germany is sitting at the bottom of the Group E table, having lost the match it played against Japan 1-2 on Wednesday.


Earlier in the day, two-time winners Argentina kept their FIFA World Cup knockout stage qualification on course with a 2-0 win over Latin American rivals Mexico at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. On Saturday, in the last match of the day, Argentina, which lost their first match to Saudi Arabia, scored in the 64th minute through Lionel Messi to register their first win and three points.


Belgium and Morocco are slated to clash and Canada will go up against Croatia in their respective Group F matches on Sunday.
