Premier League clubs Everton and Nottingham Forest have been charged by the Premier League for breaching financial rules. The sides will potentially face points deduction and the expected deduction can be of 10 points. This will be a hammering blow for the Merseyside club Everton as they had already faced points deduction back in November 2023 and can potentially hurt thier position in the Premier League in long run.
The decision was taken keeping in mind that both the clubs were suspected of malpractices and have now been referred to an independent commission that will be looking into the alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules in their accounts for 2022-23. As per the Premier League regulations, all the participating clubs (irrespective of relegation) can end up losing a maximum 105 million euros over a three-season period, or 35 million euros per campaign, before facing sanctions.
Further Misery To A Mixed Season Of Everton
Everton have already been appealing their previous charges where they were deducted 10 points and are now under a threat of losing one of the most iconic records in the history of football. Everton are the only English club in the history to have never been relegated from top flight football (even before inception of Premier League in 1992) ever since their promotion back in the 18th century.
"Everton and Nottingham Forest have each confirmed that they are in breach of the league's profitability and sustainability rules. This is as a result of sustaining losses above the permitted thresholds for the assessment period ending season 2022-23. In accordance with Premier League rules, both cases have now been referred to the chair of the judicial panel, who will appoint separate commissions to determine the appropriate sanction," said Premier League in a released statement.
