Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: In a rare sight, fans of rival Kolkata football clubs East Bengal and Mohun Bagan came together to protest together on the streets outside the Salt Lake Stadium against the rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata even as the city police tried to stop them from marching. Notably, arch-rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan were scheduled to faceoff in a group-stage Durand Cup fixture at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan- the Salt Lake Stadium.
The match was cancelled owing to potential security issues that could arise amid the massive protests happening in the city after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College that has shaken the entire country.

The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said that the match had been cancelled as they anticipated that some attempts coud be made by some organisations to create disturbances in the stadium while the match happens. Even as the match was cancelled by the Durand Cup organising committee, heavy police deployment was made outside the stadium, in anticipation of protests which did happen.
Kolkata Police has even made some detentions of football fans who were protesting outside the stadium. Slogans like "We want justice" were being shouted as fans of both the clubs, kept their traditional rivarly aside and came together to join the doctors' protest.

Section 163 Of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Imposed In And Around The Stadium
Meanwhile, it is being learnt that section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been imposed in and around the stadium. The same will be in place from 4 pm to midnight on Sunday (August 18) to stop anyunwanted law and order situation amid the already tensed circumstances.
