USA cricket team decided to bowl first after winning the toss, inviting Zimbabwe to come out to bat first. Zimbabwe posted an astonishing 408 runs for loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Zimbabwe captain Shaun Williams played a remarkable innings of 174 runs in 101 balls to help Zimbabwe cross the 400-run mark in ODI cricket for the first time. The match was played at Harare's Sports Club ground.

In reply to Zimbabwe's mammoth 408/6 in 50 overs, American were bundled out for mere 104 runs with Richard Ngarwa and Sikandar Raza taking two wickets apiece. In this way, Zimbabwe recorded the biggest victory in their ODI cricket history, overall the second biggest win in ODI cricket history. Back in the year 1999, Zimbabwe had defeated Kenya by 202 runs in Dhaka.
