Sunil Gavaskar on Ajinkya Rahane: Senior India batter Ajinkya Rahane made an inspiring comeback in India's Test team with his remarkable outing against Australia in recently-concluded World Test Championship Final. Rahane orchestrated a remarkable resurgence in IPL 2023, which helped him reclaim his spot in the Indian Test team, playing his career's first-ever World Test Championship Final. Rahane's resurgence also saw BCCI making him the vice-captain of Indian Test team for upcoming India tour of West Indies. Meanwhile, former India player Sunil Gavaskar isn't happy with Rahane's re-election as the vice-captain of the Test team.

"There is nothing wrong in having Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain. But it’s a missed opportunity to groom a young player. At least, tell a young player that we are looking at you as a future captain. So, he starts to think as a future leader," said Gavaskar during an exclusive conversation with Sports Today.

Gavaskar even named a few young players who can replace Rohit Sharma as captain of India's Test team in near future.

"One is Shubman Gill and the other is Axar Patel as future captains because Axar comes in leaps and bounds. He just gets better every match. Giving him the responsibility as vice-captain will make them think. So, these are the two candidates in my view," the former India captain added.

One year back, Ajinkya Rahane was dropped from Team India before the home series against Sri Lanka. Rahane was the vice-captain of the Indian team before this, but ahead of the tour of South Africa in December 2021, he was removed from the post and this responsibility was handed over to Rohit Sharma, who later went on to become India captain in all three formats after Kohli was removed from the esteemed position.
