World Cup 2019: Kohli becomes fastest skipper from subcontinent to register 50 ODI wins

Virat Kohli, who took over the reigns of India's ODI captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2017, registered his 50th win as captain in 69 matches.

Virat Kohli on Wednesday added yet another feather to his already stellar captaincy record by becoming the fastest skipper from the subcontinent to register 50 wins. Virat achieved the milestone after he led India to a thumping six wicket win over South Africa in their World Cup opener at Rose Bowl in Southampton Virat Kohli, who took over the reigns of India's ODI captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2017, registered his 50th win as captain in 69 matches. Kohli went past West Indies legend Vivian Richards who had got to the 50-win mark in 70 matches. West Indies great Clive Lloyd holds the record for the fastest captain to 50 wins in ODIs. The Big Cat got to the milestone in just 63 matches. Australia's World Cup-winning skipper Ricky Ponting is also joint topper of the elite list. Late South Africa captain Hanse Cronje is second on the list after having reached the milestone in just 68 matches. India have gone from strength to strength under Virat Kohli's captaincy and have been one of most consistent teams in limited overs cricket. While Rohit Sharma hit a well-paced hundred to give India the control during their 228-run chase, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal ripped through the Proteas middle order, picking up 6 wickets between them. Kohli came up with attacking plans as he picked both the wrist-spinners in the playing XI and put pressure on South Africa with three slips when Jasprit Bumrah was breathing fire after South Africa opted to bat.
