ENG-W vs SA-W Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: England Women defeated South Africa Women by seven wickets in the ninth fixture of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on October 7 (Monday). This came as England’s second win in as many matches in the league-stage. Sophie Ecclestone was awarded the Player of the Match award for her impressive bowling figures of 2-15 in four overs.


South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt won the toss and opted to bat first against England. After a cautious start, South Africa lost opener Tazmin Brits to England's Linsey Smith but number three Anneke Boschforged a partnership with Wolvaardt before she fell with South Africa’s score reading 71-2 in 13.2 overs. From then on, South Africa could not regain control of their innings as they could not finish big despite four wickets in hand,  eventually finishing on 124-6 after 20 overs.

Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn shone with the ball for England as they gave away minimal runs to the Proteas batters as they combinedly took three wickets.

Chasing 125 runs, England got off to a rocky start as they lost opener Maia Bouchier in the fifth over but the other opener in Danielle Wyatt-Hodge played the anchor role to give England an upper hand. 


South Africa, however, looked like making a comeback as they bagged Alice Capsey’s wicket in the middle phase of the innings and then also sent Wyatt-Hodge packing but Nat Sciver-Brunt made sure that that was the last wicket that South Africa got as she got the Three Lions over the line with a match-winning 36-ball 48 runs knock.


With the win, England now sit at the top of the Group B points table with four points in two games and with the Net Run Rate of (NRR) of +0.653.
