The BCCI on Thursday declared that both men and women will be getting the same match fee. They will be getting INR 15 lakhs for the Test, INR 6 lakhs for ODI, and INR 3 lakhs for the T20I.
Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary took to his Twitter handle and wrote, “I’m pleased to announce BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket".
"The women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support," he added.
In the recently concluded BCCI AGM, it was confirmed that the first season of the women's IPL will be played in 2023. Days after the BCCI AGM, the administrators decided to implement the pay equity policy.
This historic move of the BCCI will create a positive impact on Indian women's cricket. It will encourage a lot of budding cricketers to take the game on a professional front. The Indian women's cricket team reached the final of the T20 World Cup in 2020 and also grabbed the silver medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Earlier, the New Zealand Cricket Board announced a similar decision that the women’s national team will get the same match fee as men.
