India Vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI: Sri Lanka Cricket has hit a roadblock since the start of 2023, as the Island nation's cricket and form across ICC tournaments has gone into a dark abyss. Such are the times of adversity in their cricket, that they have failed to make into the knockout stages of the last editions of ICC ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup.
A nation who once was used to making into consecutive finals, is now struggling to find a direct qualification spot in ICC Champions Trophy.
Speaking on the tough times, and the horrific run chase-choke in the 3rd T20I, Sanath Jayasuriya stated that he "hates losing" and that, "his players know this fact". The Sri Lanka legend also assured fans that the side will do well in the ODI series against India.
"I'm interim coach and I've only got these two series, but that's not how I think. When I was playing, and even now, I hate to lose. The players who are around now know that too. When I talk to them, I tell them that fans in this country love the game, and a lot of us, including me, have brought cricket into this country to a certain place," said Sanath Jayasuriya, as reported by ICC.
"I've spoken about that a lot individually with players and as a team. In terms of facilities and practice, I've tried to do as much as I can. What I want is to create a good environment so they can be mentally in the right place and can play with confidence," he added.
Sanath Jayasuriya Jumps In Defence Of Underfire Captain Charith Asalanka
Charith Asalanka has faced immense criticism for his poor form and captaincy in the recently concluded T20I series against T20 World champions India, as the visitors sealed a series whitewash over the hosts. The SL head coach hails Asalanka as a "great player", and that, he is a pure "professional".
"Charith Asalanka is one of our best players in this (ODI) format, and we need to remember that. But when you get the captaincy, there is some pressure. I've been there too. You have got to give them a little time in that position. There are ten more players in the side, and 16 in the squad. We all have to get together and give him the confidence too. At any moment, the captain could click. Charith Asalanka is someone who works really hard. He's very professional and communicates well," said Sanath Jayasuriya.
