New Delhi: A 104-run victory over Bangladesh in the second ODI has helped South Africa leapfrog India to become the No. 1 ranked ODI side in the ICC ODI rankings.
Both India and South Africa are at 120 rating points but South Africa are ahead of India on decimal points. The Proteas are at 6,244 points while the Virat Kohli-led Indian side is at 5,993.
South Africa sealed the ODI series by mauling Bangladesh courtesy AB de Villiers’ whirlwind century on his ODI return. Riding on AB’s swashbuckling 176 off 104 balls, South Africa posted a formidable 353 on board. In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 249. All-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo bagged the first four-wicket haul of his career.
India had taken over the mantle from leaders Australia by beating the world champions 4-1 in the recently concluded ODI series at home. South Africa, a close third, then rose to the top spot with successive victories over Bangladesh.
India, however will have a chance to get their top spot back during the New Zealand series. If India manages to beat the Kiwis in the opening match of the three-match ODI series on October 22, then they will reclaim the top spot. But to keep it for a longer period they would need a clean sweep over New Zealand, otherwise South Africa will be back as the No. 1 ranked ODI side.
