South Africa’s one of the finest spinners, who never played international cricket, Hira Jairam passed away on Monday at his home in Lenasia.

Jairam was unlucky not to play for South Africa because of the ICC-imposed ban from 1970 to 1971 as a result of the anti-apartheid movement.

In a career spanning just two years (1971/72- 1973/74), Jairam made his name with his uncanny ability to deceive the batsman. In his eight first-class matches, Jairam took 24 wickets representing Zenith and Hinds Cricket Club. Jairam was known for his accuracy and ability to surprise the batsman with vicious turn on his breaks.

Cricket South Africa’s acting chief executive officer Thabang Moroe extended his deepest condolences with Jairam’s family and those close to him.
“On behalf of the CSA family, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, his friends and his many cricketing colleagues,” Moroe said.

Moroe also descirbed Jairam as one of South Africa's finest spinners.
