The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that former India-cricketer Ramesh Powar will be the Head Coach of Women's Indian national Team. Powar's name was shortlisted from the list of 35 candidates who applied for the job.
"The three-member Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Madan Lal and Mr Rudra Pratap Singh interviewed the applicants and unanimously agreed on Mr Powar’s candidature," read a statement by BCCI.
Ramesh Powar made his International debut for India in 2004. He played his last international match against Bangladesh in 2007. Although he impressed many by picking timely wickets, his career was cut short with the influx of new players in the team. Ramesh Powar continued paying for Mumbai's Ranji team and later on shifted to play in the Rajasthan team in the final few years of his career. He also played for Kings XI Punjab and Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the IPL.
"A former international, Powar played 2 Tests and 31 ODIs for India. Post his playing career, he took up cricket coaching and is an ECB Level 2 certified coach and has also attended BCCI-NCA Level 2 coaching course. A former coach of the Indian Women’s Team from July-November 2018, it was under him that India qualified for the semi-final of the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup in 2018 and also won 14 T20 matches in a row." read the BCCI statement.
Powar has recently coached the Mumbai senior team that won the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has worked at the National Cricket Academy as a Bowling Coach.
