NZ vs AFG HIGHLIGHTS: New Zealand completely dominated the match against Afghanistan to taste yet another win in ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.
So yet another World Cup day comes to an end. New Zealand, the 2019 runners up, finish at the top of the points table with that win over Afghanistan but this is stilll early days in the competition and there will be plenty of shuffling in the team table. That's it from our coverage of this game. We will be back with our coverage of other World Cup fixtures including the big one- IND vs BAN- at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune. On behalf of all of us at ABP LIVE, thank you and good night. It was an absolute pleasure trying to bring you the updates for this game.
Victory for New Zealand who have bowled out Afghanistan for 139 to register a win by 149 runs. Santner gets the last man out to end with 3 wickets. Fourth win a row then for the Kiwis who go top of the table with that win.
So two more wickets lost for Afghanistan, rather quickly. First Mujeeb removed by Ferguson before Naveen was removed by Santner. AFG-139/9 after 34.2 Overs.
Rashid Khan departs trying to for the big shot. Ferguson gets the wicket. AFG- 134/7 after 33.3 Overs.
Rashid, Ikram In The Middle for Afghanistan.
Wicket number 100 in ODI cricket for Santner. He has cleaned up Mohammad Nabi for 7. New Zealand closing in on another win here. NZ- 125/6 after 30.4 Overs.
And another one goes down. This time it's Rahmat who has walk back. He is out, caught and bowled by Rachin Ravindra. Surely, New Zealand's game to lose this from here. They have been one of the teams to beat so far and have impressed yet again in this fixture. AFG-107/5 after 28.1 Overs.
Ikram Alikhil has joined Rahmat Shah in the middle.
Trent Boult breaks the partnership. A short ball but Azmatullah Omarzai only manages an edge to the keeper. AFG- 97/4 after 25.4 Overs.
The required rate has been mounting for Afghanistan, it's gone past 7.6 now. Only 5 boundaries so far in the innings and AFG- 74/3 after 22 overs.
After the fall of that wicket, it is Azmatullah Omarzai who has joined Rahmat in the middle. Required run rate getting closer to 7 now.
Santner with a piece of brilliance in the catch to get rid of Hashmatullah. Lockie Ferguson get the breakthrough and Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi departs for 8 off 29. The ball seemed to be falling safely but Santner covered a lot of ground to his left before putting in a dive and took the catch with his outstretched hand in side the circle after the batter failed to time the shot ball angled into him perfectly. AFG- 43/4 after 14 overs.
After the fall of those two wickets, New Zealand right on top of Afghanistan. Required run rate rising. AFG- 28/2 after 8 overs.
Hashmatullah Shahidi, Rahmat Shah Out In The Middle for Afghanistan after the fall of those wickets.
And another back in the pavilion for Afghanistan. This time around the other opener Ibrahim Zadran has departed off the bowling of Trent Boult. Zadran only managed a leading edge which went straight to cover. NZ- 27/2 after 6.1 Overs.
Henry Strikes. Just when Gurbaz seemed to have joined the party, Henry has bowled a superb delivery to bowled Gurbaz who falls for 11. AFG- 27/1 after 5.5 Overs.
Zadran The Early Aggressor so far in this partnership. He has found a boundary first off Henry, then off Boult. After 5 overs, AFG- 19/0.
Welcome back. The chase has begun already with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran opening the innings for Afghanistan. Trent Boult and Matt Henry the new-ball bowlers for New Zealand. The Kiwis have lost a review already, shockingly opting to go for a DRS for a Lbw call where the ball was pitching outside leg. After 2 overs, AFG- 6/0.
Afghanistan need 289 to win. STAY TUNED For the chase coming up. We will be back with our coveage of the same in a short while.
Will Young- 54 off 64, Glenn Phillips- 71 off 80 and Tom Latham-68 offf 74 the stars with the bat for New Zealand. As far as Afghanistan are concerned, they had Kiwis down to 110/4 but allowed them to reach 288/6. There were dropped catches and even a missed stumping opportunity that could be decisive. Azmatullah Omarzai picked 2 wickets in an over but later ended up conceding 56 runs off his 7 overs. Naveen-ul-Haq also picked 2 wickets for 48 runs in his 8 overs while Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1/57) and Rashid Khan (1/43) scalped a wicket each.
FOUR to finish off the innings and they manage 288/6 after losing two wickets in an over twice during that innings. Afghanistan looked set to restrict the Kiwis for even less but were let down by their fielders who dropped some regular catches.
Naveen bowling the final over for Afghanistan.
Just the kind of innings New Zealand needed at this stage. They have got 20 runs off the over with two boundaries and a six coming off the bat of Chapman. Azmatullah was the bowler. NZ-277/6 after 49 overs.
Chapman, Santner Out In The Middle for New Zealand. Last 2 overs to go. 280 is on. Let's see how much New Zealand end up getting from here.
3 Runs and 2 Wickets from the 48th over. Brilliant stuff from Naveen and Afghanistan. NZ- 257/6 after 48 overs.
Two wickets in the over once again in this innings as Latham is bowled by Naveen. The left-hander goes back for 68 off 74 balls. NZ- 255/6 after 47.3 Overs.
Mark Chapman comes into bat for the BlackCaps at a stage where they would be happy with a brisk cameo.
OUT! So the 144-run partnership between Phillips and Latham finally comes to an end. A full toss from Naveen but the batter failed to get any timing and finds Rashid Khan in the deep. Phillips departs for 71 off 80. NZ- 254/5 after 47.1 overs.
18 runs coming off the 47th over. 250 Comes up for New Zealand who are 254/4 after 47 overs. 18 balls to go in this innings.
Azmatullah into the attack and he has been taken to the cleaners by Latham soon after his fifty. The left-hander has slammed him for two successive sixes. That is exactly what New Zealand were trying to achieve. The dropped catches and opportunities to break this partnership that they have put down would be hurting Afghanistan.
Fifty comes up for Latham now. 10 runs off the 46th over with the help of a boundary from the bat of Latham. Gets to the landmark off 67 balls. NZ- 236/4 after 46 overs.
While Phillips has already completed a fifty, Latham is approaching one.
We are heading into the final five overs of the Kiwi innings and Glenn Phillips, it seems like, has just put his foot on the acceleator.
So 4 runs coming off the 35th over then which was bowled by Mujeeb. NZ-163/4. Would be interesting to see their reading of the pitch and the score they would be looking at from this stage.
Glenn Phillips and Tom Latham have done a good job of rebuilding the Kiwi innings. Partnership worth 32. NZ- 142/4 after 31 overs. Glenn Phillips- 19* off 28, Tom Latham- 12* off 28.
Another batter back in the pavilion. New Zealand are collapsing like a pack of cards. Afghanistan believe they can pull of another win here as Rashid Khan gets rid of Mitchell who has pulled a ball straight to midwicket. NZ- 110/4 after 21.4 Overs. Afghanistan have taken 3 wickets in 9 deliveries now.
Azmatullah gets two in the same over. Ravindra off the second ball and the half-centurion Young off the final ball with Iram Alikhil taking a brilliant catch diving to his left to produce the breakthrough. NZ- 110/3 after 21 overs.
Daryl Mitchell comes it at number 4. He joins Young who has already completed a half-century. What a fine performance this has been from him. He is batting on 54 off 63 already.
Azmatullah Omarzai cleans up Rachin Ravindra who was looking good. Trying to go for a heave but misses and Afghanistan get their second. NZ- 109/2 after 20.2 overs.
Once again Nabi into the attack and another six from the bat of Young. 10 runs coming off the 15th over, New Zealand- 80/1.
So a positive approach from the New Zealand batters. Two sixes in the over from Mohammad Nabi, one each from Young And Ravindra to provide some impetus into this innings. After 14 overs, NZ- 70/1. Going at 5 runs an over.
Seems like there has been another dropped catch in the last ball of the ninth over. Ravindra managed just the toe end of that bat on that Mujeeb delivery but captain Hashmatullah Shahidi drops the catch this time. NZ- 42/1 after 9 overs.
Rachin Ravindra comes in at number 3 for New Zealand.
There it is. An early wicket for Afghanistan. Mujeeb gets rid of Conway, out LBW. The on-field umpire gave it not out but Afghanistan went for the review and the decision had to be overturned. Just when it looked like NZ have settled in, AFG strike. NZ- 30/1 after 6.3 Overs.
After that early cautious approach where they even looked a bit tentaive, New Zealand are looking far more settled now in this innings. They have got a few boundaries as well and are looking in some control after being asked to bat first. After 6 overs, NZ- 26/0. Devon Conway- 16* off 15, Will Young- 10* off 21.
New Zealand release pressure in the second over from Mujeeb. After two overs, the score was just 2/0 but they have taken 10 runs off the third including the first boundary of the match coming off the bat of Conway. End Of Over 3, NZ- 12/0.
So a maiden over to begin things from Fazalhaq Farooqi.
Would you believe it? Rahmat Shah has dropped a catch at the first slip off the bowling of Farooqi. Will Young was the batter. Not the most difficult chance and what a boost would that have been to their confidence, had it been taken.
Just 2 singles off the first over then from Mujeeb. Fazalhaq Farooqi With the New ball from the other end for Afghanistan. They Afghans are fresh off a historic win, mind you.
Will Young, Devon Conway set to open the innings for New Zealand. Mujeeb Ur Rahman with the new ball in hand for Afghanistan. Match Number 16 of ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 gets underway.
Time For the National Anthems.
We are minutes away from the start of play then. A decision that surprised many when Afghanistan decied to bowl first, given their record defending totals. But this Afghanistan team believes it can make a difference even when bowling first and having to chase down totals.

The Kiwi side has been dominating the mega event as they won all three games and are currently standing second in the league table. On the back of that win, they also marked their first victory in the campaign following losses to Bangladesh and India. They are currently placed at the sixth spot in the league standings, with two points from three games. The batting line-up of Afghanistan depends a lot on the shoulder of Gurbaz who has been going through a brilliant form. In the last game against England, he ended up scoring 80 runs and will look to do the same in the upcoming encounter.
Both teams will be looking to continue their momentum in order to win the game.
