NZ vs SL HIGHLIGHTS: New Zealand Beat Sri Lanka By 5 Wickets
NZ vs SL HIGHLIGHTS, ICC World Cup 2023: New Zealand are potentially the frontrunners to play the semis against India.
That's it from our coverage of this game. Thank you so much for joining us. On behalf of all of us at ABP LIVE, wishing you all a good night.
A foot in the semis is New Zealand's. They have 10 points and even though both Pakistan and Afghanistan can catch up with them as far as the points are concerned, it would be next to impossible task for them to better their net run rate which stands at +0.743 compared to Pakistan's +0.036 and Afghanistan's -0.338. If they do, they will meet India in a repeat of the 2019 semifinals this time around at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15 (Wednesday).
New Zealand Beat Sri Lanka By 5 Wickets! They finish the league stage with 10 points.
New Zealand might have lost a few more wickets than their liking but they are on the verge of a win in Bengaluru. NZ- 164/5 after 23 overs. They need 8 runs to win.
A brisk start for the Kiwis but suddenly they lose both the openers. Devon Conway was the first to go for 45 off 42, falling to Maheesh Theekshana before Rachin Ravindra departed for 42 off 34 in the next over. Maheesh Theekshana the bowler. SL- 88/2 after 13.3 Overs. Match, however, firmly in New Zealand's grip despite the wickets.
Good start for the Kiwis. They should set things up nicely for the Kiwis. Six boundaries already and both the batters have gotten underway. After 5 overs, NZ- 32/0. They need 140 from 45 overs.
Madushanka, Theekshana The New Ball Bowlers For Sri Lanka bowling from either ends.
Conway, Ravindra Open For Kiwis. They need 172 to win to give themselves the best chance of playing the semifinal against India
Sri Lankan innings never really took off. Even though wickets fell at the other end, Kusal Perera did score a quickfire 51 off just 28 balls, he couldn't find support at the other end nor could he continue long enough to invoke some sense of panic in the opposition. Other than Perera, Angelo Mathews (16 off 27), Dhananjaya de Silva (19 off 24), Maheesh Theekshana (38 off 91) and Dilshan Madushanka (19 off 48) were the other batters to register a score in double figures. For the Kiwis, Trent Boult (3/38) set the tone but Lockie Ferguson (2 for 35), Mitchell Santner (2/22) and Rachin Ravindra (2/21) were also impressive. Tim Southee was the one who took the first wicket to fall, finishing with figures of 1/52. New Zealand need 172 to win and more or less secure a place in the semis.
The last-wicket stand between Dilshan Madushanka and Maheesh Theekshana worth 43 off 87 balls was the highest in this innings which tells a story in itself. Sri Lanka eventually manage 171 which is massively underpar given the ground dimensions and the batting conditions on offer at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Can Sri Lankan bowlers still take a leaf out of their Kiwi counterparts and register a surprise win? We shall find out.
Si Lanka Are Bowled Out For 171. New Zealand need 172 to win.
The Men From the island country have ensured they get past the 150-run mark.
And so it's just a matter of time before the innings gets wrapped up. SL- 128/9 after 32.1 Overs as Ravindra gets a wicket right after the Drinks break. Dushmantha Chameera goes for 1 off 20 balls. Kiwis look determined to secure a place in the semis.
Chamika Karunaratne goes back for 6 off 17. Ferguson has another. Sri Lanka 8 Down For 113 in 23.3 overs.
Coming To A Rather Quick End this Sri Lankan innings. First Mathews went back, getting out on 16 off 27 and Sri Lanka 104/6 after 16.4 overs, falling to Mitchell Santner. Then Santner got another one with Dhananjaya de Silva getting out on 19 off 24. SL -105/7 after 18.3 overs.
Fifty And Out For Perera. Departs for 51 off 28 and it's Lockie Ferguson who has a wicket to his credit. Big trouble Sri Lanka who have lost half their side inside the powerplay. Another attacking shot from Perera but fails to get the desired connection and its caught in the covers. SL- 70/5 after 9.3 Overs.
WICKET! Another one goes down. Third wicket inside the powerplay for Boult and it's that of Asalanka who goes back for 8 off 8. Good review from the Kiwis as the on-field call was not out for LBW. SL- 70 /4 after 8.2 overs.
Charith Asalanka Joins Perera in the middle who has been playing with an attacking intent.
Two wickets in the over then from the left-arm pacer. Sadeera Samarawickrama departs for 1 off 2. It's the ball going away that produces the edge which is accepted gleefully at first slip. SL-32/3 after 4.4 Overs.
Another one goes down. This time it is Trent Boult who provides New Zealand the breakthrough. Pitched on length and angling away but as the batter looks to play it towards midwicket, the ball takes the leading edge and flies to third man. Kusal Mendis out for 6 off 7. Rachin Ravindra takes the catch. SL-30/2 after 4.1 Overs.
Kusal Mendis has come in at number 3 for Sri Lanka.
Boult and Southee have been operating from the two ends.
It is a must-win game for the Kiwis as far as their chances of securing a place in the semis is concerned and they have started well as Tim Southee strikes. He gets rid of Pathum Nissanka who goes back for 2 off 8 balls. It is a classic outswinger which has produced the edge. SL- 3/1 after 1.5 Overs.
Nissanka and Kusal Perera started batting. Boult bowled the first over.
Kusal Mendis: I was looking to bowl. But unfortunately we are batting first. Very important game today. If we do the basics well, we should do well. NZ is a calm team. We played here against and played well. One change for us. Rajitha is not playing but Chamika is playing.
Kane Williamson: We will have a bowl first. Little bit of weather around. Little bit of unknowns. By and large we have won a few and lost a few. Been there and there abouts. Some close ones which could have gone either ways. Here we are here today, would want to address the issue in front of us. Lockie comes in for Ish Sodhi. Adjust to what is in front of us. Make use of the ball first up.

Background
New Zealand will lock horns with Sri Lanka in a ‘do-or-die’ game on Thursday in Bengaluru. The Blackcaps who commenced the ICC World Cup 2023 with an empathic win against defending champions England (win by 9 wickets) seemed all set to dominate the tournament. However, now they are on the edge of getting eliminated if they lose this particular game. As of now they have scored 8 points from as many games and are currently intimidated by teams like Pakistan and Afghanistan for the fourth position.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has had a below-average tournament this year as they have only won two games so far out of 8 matches. They are standing at the bottom of the points table along with the Netherlands. Both New Zealand and Sri Lanka have faced each other in 101 ODIs so far where the Black Caps have sealed victories 51 times while Sri Lanka 41 times. 8 matches ended with no results while 1 match ended in a tie. The last time when both faced each other in an ODI game was back in March 2023 where New Zealand won the game by 6 wickets.
As far as the World Cup is concerned, a total of 11 games have been played between both the teams where Sri Lanka holds a better record with 6 wins while New Zealand have won 5 times. The game between New Zealand and Sri Lanka is set to take place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru which has always been known as a batters’ paradise because of the small boundaries.
